Norberta Wachter Schoene

1943-2026

Norberta Wachter Schoene passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, in Maryland, where she resided in College Park with her spouse, William E. M. Lands.

She was born on July 9, 1943 in Kansas. She is survived by her spouse and two sisters, Melmarie Whitlow and Damona Wachter.

Norberta was a dedicated scientist, educator and philanthropist whose life’s work reflected her commitment to advancing knowledge and improving human health. A lifelong research biochemist, she devoted her professional career to the study of human nutrition and authored numerous scholarly publications. She was widely respected for her expertise and contributions to her field.

Education was a cornerstone of Norberta’s life. She believed deeply in giving back to the institutions that helped shape her activities. She remained a dedicated supporter of educational, academic, and service organizations throughout her life.

Among her many honors, she was especially proud to receive the Dr. Kenneth Bateman Outstanding Alumni Award from Pittsburg State University in 1975. Norberta’s generosity extended far beyond academia.

In partnership with William Lands and the Tom & Virginia Seely Foundation, she established and managed the Paradox Fund, an initiative dedicated to fostering curiosity, learning, and community engagement in Morgan County, West Virginia. The fund supports programs that encourage exploration of the arts, sciences, technology, social studies, and wellness, helping learners of all ages develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

She was a founding member of the Morgan County Forum for Arts, Science and Technologies (FAST), which provided educational grants and opportunities designed to inspire learning beyond the classroom. Through these efforts, Norberta championed innovative education and community nutrition programs that benefited both students and families.

An avid reader and lifelong learner, Norberta supported her local library and encouraged intellectual curiosity wherever she could.

Those who knew her will remember her as a thoughtful, compassionate, and remarkably intelligent woman whose generosity, dedication to education, and commitment to improving human health touched countless lives.

Norberta’s legacy lives through the scientific contributions she made, the educational opportunities she helped create, and the many people whose lives were enriched by her kindness, vision, and enduring belief in the power of knowledge.

Carol Ann Puffenberger

1944-2026

Carol Ann Puffenberger (Eaton), 82, of Winchester, Va., passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Winchester Medical Center.

Carol was born on March 30, 1944, in Paw Paw, W.Va., to the late Rodney Harding Eaton Sr. and Effie Virginia Eaton (See).

She graduated from Paw Paw High School and later dedicated her career to helping others as a phlebotomist for Valley Health Services, from which she eventually retired.

A woman of the Baptist faith, Carol filled her life with the things and people she loved most.

She was a former member of the Moose Lodge and had a passion for the outdoors, especially camping and fishing. She loved cooking big, comforting meals for her family, testing her luck at Bingo and working on her creative projects, which included writing her own children’s book. Her beloved dog, also named Bingo, was a constant source of joy. Above all, she cherished the time spent surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Denver G. Puffenberger, who passed away on August 27, 2024. C

arol’s legacy lives on through her loving family, including her daughter, Tamela “Tammy” Meade; her sons, Christopher T. Puffenberger (Sabrina) and Michael Puffenberger; her five surviving grandchildren, Dane Lynn Meade, Jr., Ashley Michelle Meade, Courtney Nicole Westfall, Rachel Marie Puffenberger and Morgan Amber Funkhouser; and her twelve adored great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters and one brother.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Daniel Lynn Meade, and one brother.

A memorial service at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel will be on July 31, 2026, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Lynn Durbin officiating. Interment will be private in Woodrow Cemetery in Paw Paw, W.Va.

Joyce Elaine Pugh Kline

1940-2026

Joyce Elaine Pugh Kline, 86, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., completed her earthly journey on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, in Frederick, Md., following a brief but aggressive battle with cancer.

Born on March 30, 1940, in Montcalm, W.Va., Joyce was the daughter of the late George and Clara Kade Taylor.

She graduated from Montcalm High School in 1958 as a member of its first graduating class. During her school years, she excelled both academically and socially, serving as a member of the National Honor Society, Secretary of the Future Teachers of America, Yearbook Editor, Student Council member, theater participant, head majorette for four years, and President of the Future Homemakers of America.

Joyce began her career as a telephone operator with General Telephone Company of the Southeast from 1959 to 1961.

On October 15, 1961, she married the love of her life, Wendell E. Pugh, and together they moved to Rockville, Md.

She continued her career with the Chesapeake & Potomac (C&P) Telephone Company, first as an operator and later as a Service Representative until the birth of their first child.

As a loving mother to Kevin and Kimberly, Joyce dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family. She served as a room mother, volunteered in the school cafeteria, and was a Cub Scout Den Mother from 1971 to 1976, touching countless young lives through her service.

Joyce later joined Montgomery County Public Schools as an Instructional Assistant with the Vocational Support Teams at Rockville and Richard Montgomery High Schools. She worked with students in carpentry, woodworking, electricity, fashion merchandising, and food service. Additionally, she assisted special needs students helping them succeed in the academic portions of these classes. She truly adored her students and believed deeply in their potential. In recognition of her outstanding dedication, she received the 1986 Maryland Association of Vocational Education for Special Needs Persons (MAVESNP) Award for Outstanding Service as a Special Needs Paraprofessional.

Following her retirement from Montgomery County Public Schools in 1988, Joyce and Wendell settled in Berkeley Springs, where she enthusiastically embraced community life.

She enjoyed amateur radio (call sign WA3WQM), square dancing and Vacation Bible School, where she faithfully hosted the annual youth pool party for many years. She was a member of the Gilbert & Sullivan music appreciation group, volunteered with MCEAT, belonged to numerous square dance clubs, and founded the Timber Ridge Twirlers. She also served as State Representative and Secretary for Seniors with AARP and coordinated meals for Camp Joy.

A faithful servant of the Lord, Joyce was a devoted member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church. She served on the church council as Membership and Attendance Secretary, taught Sunday School, worked with the youth ministries, and, as she often joked, served on every committee except the choir.

Joyce was a Life Member of the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), a member of QST magazine, OMXYL (Old Man’s XYL), and the 10-10 International Club. Through amateur radio, she formed lasting friendships with people around the world.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, George Edgar “Junior” Taylor and James Edward “Eddie” Taylor; and her first husband of 48 years, Wendell E. Pugh.

On June 22, 2013, Joyce married Paul Kline, with whom she shared many happy years.

In addition to her husband, Paul, and his family, she is lovingly survived by her son, Kevin E. Pugh and wife Deanie; her daughter, Kimberly E. McCullagh and husband Robert; five grandsons, Nicholas K. Pugh, Christopher R. McCullagh (Katie), Cody D. Pugh, Michael F. McCullagh, and Sean R. McCullagh; two cherished great-grandchildren, Tucker and Violet (her family, Alison, Steven, Alan, Oliver, and Clara); her sister-in-law, Leta Arleen Payne of Raleigh, North Carolina; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Joyce cherished the names Mom, Aunt Joyce, Grammy and GiGi.

Joyce is also survived by her treasured Simeon & Anna Squad and her many dear friends from Union Chapel and throughout the world. Joyce will be remembered for her beautiful smile, contagious laughter, unwavering faith, servant’s heart, and the joy she brought to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her kindness, generosity, and love of life touched countless lives and will continue to inspire those she leaves behind.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2026, at Union Chapel United Methodist Church with Pastor Mike Leedom officiating. Interment will follow in the Union Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends will be received at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

David Ray Cain

1954-2026

David Ray Cain, 67, of Hedgesville, W.Va., passed away on July 7, while at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility.

Born to the late Charles and Hope Cain, David lived a life rooted in family, hard work and a deep love for the outdoors.

He was happiest when with his wife, children and grandchildren, training coonhound dogs, spending time with his horses, restoring old cars and trucks, or enjoying the beauty of being outside.

David was a proud member of the Carpenters Local 132 and retired from CECO after 45 years of dedicated service. Known for his strong work ethic and skilled craftsmanship, he took great pride in the work he did throughout his career.

David was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Cheryl Ann Cain, who passed away in December 2025. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Ruth Ann Fox, Ronald Cain and Charles Leo Cain.

He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory, including his children: Steven Cain and wife Dawn, Ernie Cain and wife Jennifer, Jonathan Cain and Barbie, and Ashley Carter and husband David. David was a proud grandfather to Jazmine Briscoe, Stephanie Briscoe, Arianna Briscoe, Alex Cain, Ava Cain, Bella Cain and Wrenlee Cain. He also held a special place in his heart for his honorary grandchildren: Kaitlyn Hashem, Natalie Hashem, Jasauni Sizemore and Levi Carter. He is also survived by his sisters, Connie Mitchell and husband Greg, and Carol High; his brothers, Dale “Bo” Cain and wife Diane, and Bobby Cain; his sister-in-law, Brenda Hashem and husband Dr. Joseph Hashem; brothers-in-law Dwight Fox and Craig Fox; as well as several beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

David’s legacy of hard work, devotion to family and love for the outdoors will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He will be remembered for his willingness to lend a helping hand, his love for his family and the many memories made with those fortunate enough to know him.

Memorial services will be conducted at noon on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Brenda Hashem officiating. Private burial will be in Bethel Cemetery in Sleepy Creek, W.Va. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until service time.

Curtis “Greg” Dawson

1935-2026

Curtis “Greg” Dawson, born September 16, 1935, in Berkley Springs, W.Va., passed away on June 14, 2026, in Springboro, Ohio.

Greg was a distinguished Senior Systems Engineer at NCR, where he dedicated many years of his career prior to his retirement.

Beyond his professional achievements, Greg proudly served his country in the United States Air Force.

In his early years, Greg would fish in his hometown of Berkley Springs, a pastime that he remembered fondly throughout his life.

Greg is survived by his daughter, Lisa Gallion; grandson, Ronnie Gallion, III; great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Ronnie, IV Gallion. He is also survived by his brother, Mark (Ethelene) Dawson and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Dawson.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Emil and Tressa (Spriggs) Dawson; his wife, Jacquelyn Dawson and his brother, Emil Dawson.

Margaret Viola Roser Mayle

1942-2026

Margaret “Maggie” Viola Roser Mayle, 84, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died June 30, 2026 at home surrounded by her family.

Born January 2, 1942 in Hagerstown, Md. She was the daughter of the late Royer and Vernie Viola Roser.

Maggie was a head cashier at Grand Union in Hagerstown, Md., she was also co-owner of Mayle Lumber Co., Inc.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Mark Lee Mayle; three granddaughters, Heather, special granddaughters, Sammie and Meagan; four great-grandchildren, Riley, Taylor, Mason and Savanna; special sister and brother-in-law Kathy and Bruce Martin.

As per Maggie’s wishes, she was cremated.

A private gathering will be held at a later date.

Mary Lynn Nathan

1954-2026

Mary Lynn Nathan, age 71, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. and Rockville, Md., passed away on Sunday, July 5, 2026 at her home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born November 18, 1954 in Youngstown, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Nancy Stein Nathan.

She studied politics at Georgetown University and earned her master’s degree in political science from Purdue University and her bachelor’s degree in government from Bard College. Mary has over 20 years of experience in government and the nonprofit sectors. Her earlier career included employment as a Congressional staff member and a consultant to the U.S. Department of Labor. Mary later joined the staff of the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, where she developed expertise in fundraising, conference management and special events.

She also served in the capacity of Executive Director of the National Gaucher Foundation and later, the National Child Support Enforcement Association. Currently, she consults with private and public groups and serves on two boards.

As a young child she was diagnosed with Gaucher Disease and advocates for people with this condition. She was the co-founder and co-chair of the Gaucher Conference Committee and organized three International Gaucher Conferences.

She enjoyed reading, traveling, spending time with friends and volunteering with non-profit organizations.

Mary is survived by her brother, Michael Samuel Nathan of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Services and burial will be private.

Esther Margaret Phillips

1928-2026

Esther Margaret Phillips, age 97, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Va.

Born August 4, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Emory J. and Bessie Ellen Walls Metz.

Esther was a high school graduate. She worked at Fairchild Industries in Hagerstown, Md. and was a Total Loss Clerk for Geico in the insurance industry.

She attended Berkeley Springs Church of The Nazarene.

She enjoyed Boot Kicker country line dancing, cooking and her family.

She was affectionately known to most as Mam-maw. Esther was the heart and soul of her family. Anyone entering her home was sure to be offered a meal and a slice of something sweet. She was always full of warmth and love. Mam-maw was “home” to many.

Esther is survived by a daughter, Vickie Jane Phillips of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., one sister, June A. Moore of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., three grandchildren, Raymond Jerry Phillips, Charley Nicole Brock and Joseph Bradley Phillips, and four great grandchildren, Carter Brock, Phoenyx Phillips, Shyla Phillips and Caroline Phillips and several nieces and nephews. n addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Phillips and her two sons, Emory Gary Phillips and Raymond Jerry Phillips.

A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, July 17, 2026 at noon at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Burial will be Greenway Cemetery. The Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11-noon prior to the service.

Hometown favorite The Weber Brothers packed Berkeley Springs State Park on Saturday, July 11 with a high-energy performance of original and classic rockabilly tunes.

Currently on tour with their most recent album, this magnetic duo had people on their feet dancing and laughing along with their witty banter.

Next up in the Saturday Concerts in the Park series produced by Morgan Arts Council is The Burnett Sisters Band on July 18.

Beneath the towering ridgelines and dense hardwood forests of one of West Virginia’s most scenic destinations, 45 runners tested their endurance, determination and mental toughness during the Cacapon 12-Hour Challenge Run on Saturday, June 27.

Starting from the historic Batt Shelter and winding through the notoriously demanding Central Loop Trail, runners faced a relentless course featuring steep climbs, technical terrain and the breathtaking mountain vistas that make Cacapon State Park a crown jewel of the Eastern Panhandle.

For 12 hours, athletes pushed through the rugged wilderness, chasing personal milestones ranging from 10 miles to more than 50 miles while surrounded by the natural beauty of Cacapon’s rolling mountains for an amazing total of 1,400 miles logged. The event combined the challenge of ultrarunning with the unmatched scenery of a park known for its panoramic overlooks, towering forests and remote trail network.

“This event is about challenging yourself while enjoying one of the most beautiful places in West Virginia,” said event coordinator Jason Griffith. “Thanks and congratulations to everyone who came out to run today. We hope you had fun. A special thank you goes to our aid station supporters, Little Valley Kettle Corn and Tailwind Nutrition, whose support helped keep our runners fueled throughout the day.”

The overall title belonged to Jacob Wiener, who turned in the day’s top performance by covering an impressive 52.2 miles in 11 hours, 17 minutes, 27 seconds, the only runner to surpass the 52-mile mark.

Close behind was CJ LaRoche, who logged 51.2 miles in 11:55:50, while Justin Reed completed the men’s podium after reaching the prestigious 50-mile milestone in 11:42:24.

Men’s Top Finishers

• Jacob Wiener — 52.2 miles (11:17:27);
• CJ LaRoche — 51.2 miles (11:55:50); and
• Justin Reed — 50 miles (11:42:24)

The women’s race was highlighted by a remarkable effort from Alyssa Cook, who earned membership in the event’s 50 Mile Club by completing 50 miles in 11:42:50, her third straight championship.

Cook’s performance stood among the most impressive of the day and placed her among the event’s elite finishers.

Kathleen Kerr secured second place after covering 46.2 miles in 11:55:25, while Ingrid Adamich finished third with 45 miles in 11:55:27.

• Alyssa Cook — 50 miles (11:42:50);
• Kathleen Kerr — 46.2 miles (11:55:25); and
• Ingrid Adamich — 45 miles (11:55:27)

Strong Performances Across the Field

Several runners exceeded 40 miles on the grueling mountain course, including:

• Andrew Adamich — 46.2 miles;
• Mark Banyai — 45 miles;
• Shaun Peck — 42.2 miles;
• Kellie Eckley — 41.2 miles;
• Eric Fenske — 40 miles;
• Seth Slaymaker — 40 miles;
• John James — 40 miles;
• Eric Thomson — 40 miles; and
• Lindsey Reichley — 40 miles

The event also featured a strong contingent of runners completing the 50K distance, led by Larry Wilson, who crossed the finish line in 7:44:55. Other 50K finishers included local runner Chris Stotler of Berkeley Springs, who posted a time of 7:54:39, along with Tonya Taylor, Betsy Lyons, Emma Sands, Rebekah Good, Ralph Trotta, Catherine Turner and Susan Tripp.

The hometown community was well represented by Chris Stotler and Pedro Miguel, both of Berkeley Springs.

Stotler completed the challenging mountain course at the 50K distance in 7:54:39, while Miguel recorded an impressive 15-mile finish in 3:30:40.

Their performances highlighted the growing trail-running culture in Morgan County and underscored the strong local support for one of the region’s premier endurance events.

While the top finishers drew attention with distances exceeding 50 miles, the true spirit of the Cacapon 12-Hour Challenge was evident throughout the field. From first-time trail runners completing 10 miles to seasoned ultrarunners pushing beyond 50, every participant faced the same rugged climbs, rocky descents, and unforgiving terrain of the Central Loop Trail.

As the final runners crossed the finish line beneath the surrounding mountain ridges, the day served as a celebration of endurance, perseverance, and the natural beauty that makes Cacapon State Park a destination for outdoor enthusiasts from across the Mid-Atlantic.

For one memorable Saturday, the mountains of Cacapon provided both the backdrop and the challenge, and 45 determined runners answered the call.
