County hosts 44th annual West Virginia Historic Preservation Conference

by Lisa Schauer

For the first time, Morgan County is hosting the Preservation Alliance of West Virginia’s annual three-day conference and awards banquet, concluding at the Ice House. The conference began on Tuesday, May 12 and continues through Thursday, May 14.

The alliance supports preservation of West Virginia’s historic places. Their first conference was held in Harper’s Ferry in 1982.

As part of the conference, Town of Bath’s Historic Landmark Commission and Morgan County Historic and Genealogical Society are presenting a multi-media program on the history of Bath’s buildings.

The program – entitled “These walls talk” – will be held tomorrow, on Thursday, May 14 beginning at 2:15 p.m. in the Washington-Fairfax Room at Cacapon State Park.

Local residents are invited to attend the 90-minute program on Town of Bath’s history at no charge, said Historic Landmark Commission Chair Priscilla Jones in a public meeting held at Bath town hall on Tuesday, May 5.

All other programs in the conference, including a guided walking tour of Paw Paw by local historian David Abruzzi and headstone restoration workshops at Greenway Cemetery, required pre-registration.
