Ercel Buford Ruppenthal III

1939-2026

Ercel Buford Ruppenthal III, lovingly known to friends and family as “Sandy,” was born on December 25, 1939, and passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on May 10, 2026.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and faithful Christian whose life was defined by love, service, integrity, and dedication to both his family and his faith.

Sandy worked at Corning glass for 37 years, where he was widely respected as a highly skilled and dependable master mechanic. He retired in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, craftsmanship, and quiet leadership.

Outside of work, Sandy was a man of many talents and interests. He had a deep love for the outdoors and spent many joyful days hunting, fishing, flying, and riding his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle. He proudly travelled across the country twice on that motorcycle, embracing the open road with the spirit of independence and adventure. He also enjoyed time on the water in his bass boat, making the most of the peace and beauty of nature.

Sandy’s life was firmly rooted in his Christian faith. He was a long time member of Bethel Assembly of God, where he served faithfully as both a Sunday school teacher and usher. Later in life, he became a dedicated member of Inwood Assembly of God, continuing to live out his faith and serve his church community. His love for the Lord was evident in all that he did, and he shared faith through quiet example, humble service, and deep compassion for others.

Sandy was a family man through and through. He was married to his childhood sweetheart, Shirley Ann, for 69 years, and together they built a life of enduring love and commitment. He was the proud father of three daughters: Tonya, married to Bobby Youngblood; Vonda, married to John Palmer; and Deanna, married to Roger Ammons. He was a beloved grandfather to Jannette, Danielle, Michaella, Taylor and Garrett and a cherished great-grandfather to Vivian. He is survived by his wife and daughters named above, his brother Michael Ruppenthal, and his sister Patricia McKee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ercel B. Ruppenthal Jr. and Edith McCoy Ruppenthal, and his brother Stephen D. Ruppenthal. S

andy’s life was one of quiet strength, unwavering faith, and deep love for those around him. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of all who knew him. “Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:3 (KJV) He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
