CEOS Garden Club to host groundbreaking for accessible community garden & 9/11 Memorial garden

The Morgan County Community Educational Outreach Service (C.E.O.S.) Garden Club in partnership with the Morgan County Commissioners and WVU Extension will be breaking ground on a future ADA accessible community garden, the 9/11 Memorial Universal Garden, on Wednesday, September 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The public is invited to this free event which will feature the groundbreaking ceremony, activities for the entire family, and light refreshments.

This groundbreaking ceremony will be located at 80 War Memorial Trail in Berkeley Springs.

The mission of the CEOS Garden Club is to provide free education and resources to the community in such areas as container gardening, food preservation, the importance of pollinators, and much more.

In its efforts to both extend educational resources and beautify the community, the members of the Club have been raising awareness and donations to build a community garden with ADA raised beds, demonstration gardens, a monarch waystation, a children’s garden area, art installations from local artists, and a 9/11 Memorial, a first of its kind in Morgan County.

The new garden will have signage with braille, indicator lights for the hearing impaired, accessible raised garden beds with individual sheds for rent, a children’s sensory garden, and extra wide access points to and from the garden.

Demonstration garden beds will be utilized for free public educational workshops by organizations such as the Morgan County Master Gardeners, the CEOS Garden Club, and 4-H Clubs.

This effort will transform the current empty lot space into a place to work, learn, and grow.

Current funding for this project comes from Future Generations University Farm to Table mini-grant, Volunteer West Virginia 9/11 Day of Service grant, Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots mini-grant, Tom and Virginia Seely Foundation; in-kind donations from Eastern Panhandle Conservation District, Iron Gate Designs, Hunter’s Hardware; the Night Market Fundraiser and Berkeley Springs Farmers Market donors, and various anonymous donations from community members.

The CEOS Garden Club is currently seeking donations to build an eight to ten-foot perimeter fence for deer prevention.

The CEOS Garden Club welcomes the entire community to this free event.

RSVP by August 23 by contacting ceosgardenclub@gmail.com or calling 304-258-8400.
