Virgil Franklin Cain, Sr.
1931-2023
Virgil Franklin “Barney” Cain, Sr., age 92, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at his home surrounded by his loving family while under the care of Hospice of Panhandle.
Born October 14, 1931 in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Gardner Isaac Cain, Sr. and the late Clara Ellen Householder Cain.
Barney attended Spohrs Crossroads Schools.
He worked with the West Virginia Department of Highways as a truck driver until his retirement on November 1, 1993.
Barney loved planting flowers, growing grapes and plums and sharing them with everyone that stopped to visit. He also loved his dogs; his beloved “Puppy” passed away a short time ago and he made sure that flowers were placed on their grave every week.
Barney is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Clara Hewett Cain, at home, six children, Virgie Faye Bunker and her husband, Andrew, Pearl Rebecca “Becky” Golden, and Virgil Franklin Cain, Jr., all of Berkeley Springs, Retha Helen Porterfield and her husband, Joe of Romney, W.Va., Roseanna Shank and her husband, Darin of Warfordsburg, Pa. and George Andrew Cain of Wheeling, W.Va., 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Virginia Bechtol and five brothers, Gardner Isaac “Junior” Cain, Jr., Herbert “Ike” Cain, Melvin “Pooch” Cain, Charles “Bill” Cain and Sylvester Cain.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 5377 Martinsburg Road, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time. Roger Stotler will be officiating. Burial will be in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rodney Younker, Andrew Shank, Ryan Shank, Zachary Cain, Colton Cain and Brock Meadows.
