Apple Butter Festival 5K takes place this Sunday

The inaugural Apple Butter Festival Trail 5K, originally scheduled for October 11 during the 51st Annual Apple Butter Festival, will take place this Sunday, November 1 at 8 a.m. at Cacapon Resort State Park.

The Berkeley Springs-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce made the difficult decision to postpone the race due to forecasts of significant rainfall and concerns about potentially slippery trail conditions. The heavy rain that arrived on the original race day reinforced the decision to put the safety of runners and volunteers first.

“We were so disappointed to postpone our very first 5K, especially after the wonderful response from our community,” said Happy Rone, Executive Director of the Berkeley Springs-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce. “But while we watched the rain pour down that Sunday, we were certainly glad we’d made the decision! We’re incredibly grateful to our Race Director and Chamber Board member Alexis Dixon, New River Timing Company, and Cacapon Resort State Park for working together and being so flexible in helping us make November 1 happen.”

More than 150 runners registered for the inaugural event, and registration remains open for the rescheduled race.

With some participants unable to attend on the new date, a limited number of the custom inaugural apple-shaped finisher medals have also become available again.

The professionally timed 5K will follow Cacapon Resort State Park’s scenic cross-country course. WVU Medicine is the presenting sponsor of the inaugural race.
