Two days of relentless rain last Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 made for a soggy prom and Mother’s Day weekend locally, with some county residents also hit by an extended power outage on Saturday.
Power cuts in the western portions of Morgan County left more than 1,000 homes without power from around 8 a.m. Saturday morning to late that afternoon. Other households waited longer to get their electricity back.
Areas that typically flood during heavy rain events were under water by Saturday morning. Many roads had standing water, and were edged in debris from ditch wash-outs overnight.
The Cacapon River at Powerhouse Road crested at 14.36 feet on Sunday at 1:45 a.m., just shy of moderate flood stage. The Ca- capon’s minor flood stage is at nine feet, and moderate flood stage is at 16 feet, according to the U.S. Geologic Survey water monitors.

Potomac River levels also fell short of flood stage, cresting at Paw Paw on Sunday morning at 23.5 feet, and at Hancock at 21.75 feet. Minor flood stage for the Potomac is at 25 feet.
Boat ramps and low areas filled with rushing brown water that was slowly receding on Monday.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Department re
sponded to one vehicle stuck in high-water on River Road on Sunday, with several occupants who had to be helped out of the vehicle.
