Only fireworks on tap for National Night Out

The current situation with COVID-19 has led police and town officials to cancel a National Night Out gathering in Hancock this year. Fireworks will still be on display for the town on Tuesday, August 4. The National Night Out organization is urging areas to celebrate the annual event on October 6 rather than in August due to COVID-19, according to the group’s website.

The Hancock News incorrectly reported in a previous issue that some kind of public event would be held that night.

Police Chief Jim Robison said the fireworks that usually end the event are still going off Tuesday, August 4, at 9 p.m.

There won’t be any other events, recognizing officers, or other gatherings taking place at Widmeyer Park. In the past there have been music, games, food, and booths.

Robison said officials know the community likes the fireworks display and it would still allow people to see them while social distancing as they can be seen from various angles and distances.

There hasn’t been a lot to do in the community because of the COVID-19 situation, so the fireworks will give the community something to come out and enjoy, Robison said.
