This July was the hottest since 2011, on average, with the month’s average temperature at 79 degrees.
The July average was 77 in 2019, 75 in 2018, 76 in 2017 and 78 in 2016. There was a cooling trend that occurred in July, 2013 through July, 2015 with an average temperature of 75 degrees in 2015, 74 degrees in 2014 and 76 degrees in 2013. The decade began with a very warm streak with average July temperatures at 78 in 2010, 79 in 2011 and 78.5 in 2012.
July 2020 was a pretty dry month with 1.31 inches of rain. Precipitation has been fluctuating for the past 10 years, Geiger said. There were 6.39 inches of rain in July in 2017, 6.98 inches of rain in July, 2018 and 6.71 inches of rain in July, 2019.
Rainfall for the previous years in July were 2.39 inches in 2015, 4.69 inches in 2014, 3.13 inches in 2013, 3.36 in 2012, 2.4 inches in 2011 and 1.19 inches in 2010. There was no data for 2016. Seasonal and year precipitation varies.
Geiger said last Friday that there is a chance of showers and thunderstorms every day for the next 7-10 days with highs in the upper to lower 80s. On Monday, August 10 and Tuesday, August 11 the temperatures were forecast to be in the low 90s.
NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, just released its annual August update for the Atlantic Hurricane Outlook forecast. Forecasters predict a very active hurricane season for the Atlantic basin. It’s been an active season so far with nine storms and could be one of the busiest hurricane seasons ever.
The updated hurricane forecast calls for 19-25 named storms, with 7-11 of them becoming hurricanes with winds of 74 miles per hour or more. Their long-range forecast predicts three to six major hurricanes with winds of 111 miles an hour or greater. The six-month hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
