Jeffrey Mark Chesnut

1956-2021

Jeffrey Mark Chesnut, 65, passed away on Friday, June 4, 2021, around 10:45 p.m.

Jeff was born on February 16, 1956 to the late Raymond and Ruth (Covalt) Chesnut.

Jeff is survived by his wife of almost 28 years, Lisa, whom he married on September 3, 1993. Jeff picked the date because he said he would never forget 9-3-93; one son Joshua Chesnut and his wife Tiffany; three grandchildren, Connor, 10, Mya, 4 and Lenora, 15 months and another one on the way that is due in December and has yet to be named; one sister, Sylvia and her husband Bob Shives, of Hagerstown, Md.; one brother, Ray and wife Huldah Chesnut, of Pataskala, Ohio and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ann Garland and Karen Chesnut.

He worked for C. William Hetzer for 19 years in concrete construction. In 2013, he decided to work for his nephew Neil Chesnut, who runs a great construction company of his own, the Chesnut Company in Baltimore, Ohio. Jeff traveled to Ohio weekly and stayed with Neil and his wife, Kelly and their family. They took care of him. He loved his “Ohio family” and working in all those “fancy places.” He would send Lisa pics of what he did that day and tell her all about where he was working.

In 2017, Jeff ruptured his intestine, suffering from acute diverticulitis and due to his health issues he retired to become a full-time Pappy. Jeff was a 1974 graduate of Southern Fulton High School. Jeff was a husband, a father, an uncle, a cousin and a good friend to many people. Jeff touched everyone he ever met.

Jeff loved music. All kinds of music. It was a part of him. He loved playing his guitar and banjo. He could play anything with a string on it. He was the 1978 State WV Banjo Champion. His banjo was literally handmade for him by a wonderful man, Andy Borman. There is no other like it. He was a founding member of the highly famous Whiskey Rider Band, which had two tours, one in the 1980’s and a second in the 2000’s. He was very proud of that and always said that those were some of the best times of his life. Later, he formed another group honoring his family and our community with the Tonoloway Ramblers. Jeff played his guitar every day.

He loved his grandchildren more than life. They were the light to every one of his days. He loved being called Pap. He loved Andy Griffith and knew every episode. He loved baseball, the Orioles and the Nationals were his favorites.

He loved gardening, being outside and going to the creek and maybe get to see the blue heron that hangs out there.

For Jeff being with family, friends, partying, drinking beer and playing his guitar was the best it could get. And he was the love of Lisa’s life.
