The Maryland man who robbed the City National Bank in Berkeley Springs in June of 2019 has been sentenced to nearly four years in jail for the crime.
According to press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia, Steven L. Silverman, 50, of Thurmont, Md., was sentenced on Monday, March 16 to 46 months incarceration for bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Bill Powell announced.
Silverman pled guilty to one count of “Bank Robbery” in November 2019 in federal court. Silverman admitted to robbing the City National Bank of Berkeley Springs of $1,730 on June 4, 2019.
Silverman was also ordered to pay $1,730 to the bank in restitution.
Silverman had committed the crime on June 4 but eluded police until he returned to the bank several days later and was spotted by Berkeley Springs Police Chief T.J. Johnson, who took him into custody.
Silverman had used a note in the robbery, claiming he needed the money or his child would be hurt. He was later recognized by police in other jurisdictions as a suspect in bank crimes elsewhere.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberley D. Crockett prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and the Berkeley Springs Police Department investigated.
Chief U.S District Judge Gina M. Groh presided.
