Bath council approves pizza shop, other permits

by Trish Rudder

Two Berkeley Springs businesses received permission from the Bath Town Council to make changes on their properties.

At the February 4 meeting, the owners of the property at 33 Fairfax Street received approval to build a small pizza shop on the vacant lot next to the Fairfax Coffee Shop that is also owned by them.

It is currently a fenced-in courtyard. The owners said the 15 ft. wide by 40 ft. deep shop was approved as part of the original permit by Morgan County Planner Alma Gorse.

Since it was previously approved, the council waived a second reading so the owners can get started on the building and be ready to open it in the spring, Mayor Scott Merki said.

The council also approved the building permit for the 7-Eleven at 25 Union Street. The blueprints showed they are remodeling the inside of the store with cabinets and appliances, said Merki.

Hotel/motel fund applications

The deadline for community groups to request hotel/motel tax funds from the Town of Bath is February 29. Groups submit an application to seek the funds, which come from a local hotel tax. The request is for fiscal year 2020-21, which begins July 1.

The hotel/motel occupancy tax helps fund organizations that promote tourism, beautification, historical or cultural efforts in the town.

As dictated by law, 50 percent of the lodging tax collected goes to the local tourist bureau, Travel Berkeley Springs, for tourism promotion. The other half is distributed to the local groups that are approved by the town finance committee.

The fund request forms can be downloaded from the town website (townofbath.org) under “Forms” in the “Government” category. The form can also be picked up at the town municipal building at 271 Wilkes Street.

Each year, the finance committee reviews the funding request applications to determine how the organization/project will benefit tourism in the Town of Bath.
