After a rough start to the season, the Berkeley Springs High School Indians Baseball Team bounced back in a big way sweeping the visiting East Hardy Cougars in a home doubleheader.
In the opening game, the Indians came out red hot as the Tribe rolled to an 18-8 win. Senior Tobin Cain led the Indians at the plate with four hits. Cain tripled in the first, singled in the second and third, and hit a home run in the sixth inning. Cain also stole two bases for the Tribe.
Berkeley Springs took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Cain’s RBI triple. East Hardy bounced back scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Tribe answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Cole Morris singled to drive in a run. Senior Andrew Butts followed with an RBI single of his own to put the Indians back in front 3-2.
The Tribe pulled away with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Ayden Lackey singled to drive in a run. Junior Cameron King hit a sacrifice fly to plate a run. Morris picked up his second hit of the game with another RBI single. Butts then hit an RBI double and Cain followed with a two RBI single. Junior EJ Barkley then laced an RBI single to continue the Tribe scoring.
Sophomore Luke Spielman picked up the win for the Indians on the mound. Spielman scattered seven hits and gave up six runs in four innings of work. Spielman struck out seven Cougar batters.
The Tribe racked up 16 hits at the plate while scoring a season high 18 runs. Butts was the second Indian batter to pick up four hits on the day while Morris and Justin Stone had two hits each.
In the second game, the Indians continued the torrid offensive pace as they scored a 12-2 win. Junior Carson Orndorff got the start and win on the mound for the Tribe. Orndorff scattered four hits and gave up only two runs in five innings. Orndorff struck out four Cougar batters.
The Indians were able to take control of the game with a five run third inning. Justin Stone, Anthony Clark, Orndorff and Payton Mann all picked up RBIs for the Tribe.
The Indians had nine hits in the win as Morris and Cain had two hits each for the Indians.
The Indians were back in action Monday, April 9 when they hosted the Moorefield Yellow Jackets.
Today, Wednesday, April 11 the Indians will travel to Philip Barbour for a 4 p.m. contest. The JV Indians will play after the varsity game. Then on Friday, April 13 and Saturday, April 14 the Indians will be participating in the Bridgeport tournament.
