Several dozen friends, neighbors and family of the late Terry Frederick gathered at the gazebo in Berkeley Springs State Park for a public memorial service on Saturday, April 11.
Known locally as “Skateboard Freddie,” Frederick passed away last winter of natural causes.
He was remembered as a loving son, a house and interior painter, and a gifted athlete in wrestling and track at Berkeley Springs High School, where he was a member of the class of 1982.
Frederick legendarily earned his nickname during a trip to California with a few friends, when he skated at a park in Venice Beach with Tony Hawk, who put the sport on the map in the 1980s.
Terry suffered a traumatic brain injury in his early adult life and struggled with alcoholism in his later years.
Speaking from the gazebo, his brother Scott noted the spring weather was so beautiful, it was the kind of day Terry would have loved to walk around town. Freddie was known to locals and visitors alike as a visible part of the Berkeley Springs downtown area, walking the length of town in all seasons.
