U.S. 522 bridge among poorest in Maryland

There are 2,574 bridges in the Maryland State Highway System, 24 of which are rated as poor. One of those 24 is the U.S. 522 bridge connecting Maryland and West Virginia in Hancock.

The number of “poor” rated bridges decreased from 143 in 2005 to 20 in 2025, and then increasing slightly to 24 in 2026.
