Rev. Lloyd Baxter McCanna
1942-2026
Born January 3, 1942 in Mt. Clemens, Mich., to Neal B. and Genevieve Caroline (Schunck), Lloyd died peacefully under the care of Crossbridge Hospice and RX Family Home Health Care Services at Mercy Village, Fort Gratiot, Mich. on the morning of August 23, 2026.
Growing up in Port Huron, he graduated from Port Huron High School in 1959 and Port Huron Community College in 1961.
In 1964, Lloyd received a degree in Agricultural Engineering from Michigan State University and worked for the USDA, and in 1971 he received his Master of Divinity from Northern Baptist Seminary where he co-pastored the Baptist Chapel. His journey included being a Yellow Cab Taxi driver and living at the YMCA in Chicago. After moving to Washington, D.C., he was introduced to the United Methodist Church and received a certificate from Washington Theological Union chaplaincy program. He received the call to serve as a minister and was ordained as an UMC deacon in 1983 and an elder in 1986, serving numerous UMC churches in Maryland and West Virginia in the Baltimore-Washington Conference. Though officially retiring in 2014, he continued to pastor the congregations of the Morgan Charge in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., until April 2024.
A strong supporter of youth ministries, he attended the annual UMC youth conference. Travels included a trip to Israel, Zimbabwe for the dedication of United Methodist African University, the UMC churches in Zimbabwe and the French international Christian community, Taize. Lloyd’s community involvement included the Hope House at Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission and South Morgan Volunteer Fire Dept. in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. He supported the Southern Poverty Law Center and many other nonprofit organizations focusing on peace, justice and the betterment of all humanity.
Lloyd was a pastor at heart and was known to show up wherever there was a need. He also sent hundreds of cards with notes that filled every blank space. His wacky sense of humor popped up at the most unexpected times and he never hesitated to thank the many people who showed him kindness. Many were blessed by his generous spirit.
Lloyd was predeceased by his parents and brother Glenn Lee McCanna.
He is survived by his siblings Jeneal Knapp (Arizona), Calvin and Melody McCanna (Ohio), Baxter and Debbie McCanna (Ohio), Nora McCanna (Fort Gratiot, Mich.), Bonnie Aitken (Fort Gratiot, Mich.), Gloria McCanna (New York); many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews and great grand nieces and nephews and many friends and former congregants.
Services will take place at a later date.
Jowett Funeral Home in Port Huron, Mich., were in charge of arrangements.
