Friday crash claims life of county man

A three-vehicle accident on Friday, November 21 along Martinsburg Road has claimed the life of a Morgan County man. Sheriff Johnnie Walter said on Sunday that Leroy Boffen, 55, has died from his injuries in the crash.

According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, the serious three-vehicle accident occurred in the 8700 block of Martinsburg Road around 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Sheriff’s deputies, Morgan County EMS and the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene and found major damage on two vehicles and minor damage on a third vehicle. Deputy M. Butts investigated the crash and continues to work on gathering information about the incident. His investigation determined that Boffen was driving a Dodge Ram truck in the westbound direction when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a Nissan Rogue driven by Eva McHugh, 52, also of Morgan County. Sheriff Walter said Boffen told officers at the scene he may have fallen asleep prior to crossing the center line. An autopsy may reveal additional information about the cause of the crash.

Both Boffen and McHugh were transported to Berkeley Medical Center for medical treatment. McHugh is reported in serious but stable condition, said the sheriff.

Martinsburg Road was closed for more than an hour during the crash investigation.
