Civil War history event to take place at Greenway Cemetery on Veterans Day

A Civil War event commemorating Brevet General Simon Forester Barstow will be held at Greenway Cemetery on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11 from 2 to 4 p.m.  Guests should arrive 15 minutes early.

Dr. Daniel Murphy will act as master of ceremonies. The Civil War Trails organization, based in Williamsburg, Va., will dedicate an informational sign to General Barstow.

Historian Ed Steer will present President Lincoln’s associate, Ward Hill Lamon (played by Bob O’Connor), who will talk about General Lander’s funeral and his defense of Hancock in 1862.

Barstow served as General Lander’s adjutant.  Historian Steve French will provide a full understanding of General Barstow’s Civil War contribution and his relationship with Berkeley Springs.

The event will take about an hour, so you may want to bring a chair.

Cemetery tours will be provided after the commemoration.

The 47 Union soldiers and 15 Confederate soldiers’ gravesites will be identified by name, rank, and army.

Guides will provide insights for soldiers and individuals who made notable contributions to the war. Our guides will share stories about the GAR (a predecessor to the American Legion), political kidnappings, confiscated farms, gunrunners, and even a Confederate family tie to a previous Governor of Maryland.

Greenway Cemetery will be brought to life through this event, with research provided by Terry Golden with the Morgan County Historic and Genealogical Society.
