Under the sweltering Friday night heat of September 5, the Berkeley Springs Indians hosted the undermanned Hancock Panthers in the renewed Battle of the Potomac at Morgan Field. The energy was electric thanks to the always-ready student section decked out in theme, the booming Berkeley Springs High School Band and the spirited Lady Indians cheerleaders who kept the Tribe fired up all evening.
The Indians (1-1) didn’t waste time giving the home crowd something to cheer about. After the defense shut down the Panther offense, sophomore quarterback Jalen Miller, making his second varsity start under center, wasted no time showing off his arm. On just the second play from scrimmage, Miller connected with Kyle Moore for a 43-yard touchdown, sending the student section into a frenzy.

Moments later, after another defensive stand, junior Kyle Moore fielded a punt at his own 39-yard line, slicing through would-be tacklers for a dazzling 61-yard return to pay dirt. Just like that, the Indians had jumped to a quick 13-0 lead.

But the Panthers, with only 15 players suited up, weren’t about to back down. They responded with a grinding, clock-chewing drive that carried into the red zone. Hancock capped it off with a touchdown and added the two-point conversion, suddenly making it a 13-8 contest that had the Tribe on their heels.
That’s when Miller showed the poise of a seasoned veteran. Late in the second quarter, he hit Damian Clark on a 49-yard screen pass, and Clark did the rest, outrunning defenders to the end zone. Later, with momentum swinging, Miller struck again, this time hooking up with Moore for an explosive 80-yard touchdown strike to send the Indians into halftime up 25-8.
The second half was all Berkeley Springs. Senior Jackson Ambrose pounded in a rushing touchdown, followed by freshman Brayden Boyer, who added a score of his own. Saul Williams tacked on one extra point, and the Tribe stretched their lead to 38-8. With Hancock’s roster depleted by cramps and exhaustion in the heat, both teams agreed to shorten the final quarter, showing mutual respect and sportsmanship.
By the end of the night, the story was clear: this was Miller’s breakout performance. The sophomore quarterback finished an eye-popping 8-of-9 passing for 327 yards and three touchdowns, dazzling the home crowd and giving the Tribe faithful plenty of reasons to believe in the future.
The offensive attack was balanced beyond Miller’s arm. On the ground, Berkeley Springs was led by Ambrose (24 yards, TD), Boyer (45 yards, TD), Brendan Gallagher (30 yards), Chase Stotler (31 yards), Steven Schmidt (24 yards) and Devin Henry (21 yards). Through the air, Moore (2 receptions, 123 yards, 2 TDs), Aulabaugh (2 receptions, 95 yards), Clark (1 reception, 49 yards, TD), Adam Rippeon (2 receptions, 44 yards) and Schmidt (1 reception, 16 yards) all contributed in a fireworks-filled night.
Defensively, the Tribe swarmed. Henry Brown led the way with 11 tackles and 2 sacks, while Brian Ailor added 10 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Ambrose (9 tackles), David Dillon (7 tackles), Boyer (5 tackles), Moore (4 tackles) and Matthew Wolfe (4 tackles) also anchored a defensive unit that stifled Hancock outside of its lone first-half drive.
The Indians now turn their attention to another home showdown as they host the Clear Spring Blazers this Friday, September 12, at Morgan Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
