1950-2025

James (Jimmy) Douglas Funkhouser, 74, of Hedgesville, W.Va., passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

Born on December 7, 1950, in Charleston, W.Va., he was the son of the late Marvin Funkhouser and Dorothy (Waltrick) Funkhouser.

In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by sisters, Lorraine (Funkhouser) Shank and Lisa Funkhouser.

Jimmy served as an Army veteran in the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed his quiet cabin life in West Virginia, among the wildlife, fall leaves and winters snowed inside. Jimmy always appreciated a colorful sunset, a starry night or a squirrel at his bird feeder. He gave a safe and loving home to countless stray cats. Jimmy enjoyed watching accounts of the Vietnam War and World War II in addition to old episodes of Looney Toons. Jimmy will be remembered as a talented musician, writing his own songs, singing and playing guitar with family and friends.

Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Shannon (Funkhouser) Shields; nephew, Jay Merrbaugh; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of a formal service, sing a song, have a beer, take a nap, love a cat, honor a vet or shoot the breeze with an old friend and remember good times.
