Town of Bath history markers get a facelift

Informational plaques around downtown Berkeley Springs tell the story of the forming and early layout of the Town of Bath. New plaques, which are metal, will replace aging and faded signs that were installed around 1976’s Bicentennial celebrations.

This past week, Terry Golden, Vice President of the Morgan County Historical and Genealogical Society, started the replacement effort for the year.

Several plaques had been replaced in previous years under the guidance of Fred Widmeyer. This year, the Historical Society aims to replace 80 existing signs and to add new signs in locations that haven’t had them, for a total of 112 new plaques.

The effort is funded by donations to the Historical Society, funds from the DAR and the Town of Bath council’s funding through the local Hotel/Motel tax.

Anyone wishing to help with the sign project, schedule the installation of a new sign or make a donation can reach Terry Golden at 304-433-5598.

A walking tour brochure showing the location of each lot are available at the Visitor’s Center, the public library and where tourism brochures are on display.
