George Edward Houk lll
1938-2025
Our father, George Edward Houk III, age 87, known as Ed or Eddie to friends and family, made his transition to heaven on April 2, 2025.
He was a loyal friend and a father who loved unconditionally.
Born March 31, 1938, to Bernice (Trimper) Houk and George Edward Houk, Jr. in Baltimore, Md., Ed grew up with his older sister, Lois (Houk) Reichard, who preceded him in death. He often remarked that he never had a fight with his sister throughout their lives.
Ed grew up in Baltimore Highlands, Md., and graduated from Catonsville High School.
He enlisted in the Navy Reserves while in high school and entered active duty soon after graduation. During his time in the Navy he worked in the Pentagon’s printing room and served two tours on the USS Purdy during the final stages of the Korean War.
After his military service Ed worked for BFF Printing in Baltimore, Md. and then as a printing press operator for the Department of Defense.
Before Ed started his first tour on the USS Purdy he married Shirley (Adams) Houk, his beloved wife of 66 years, who preceded him in death. Together they started their life by working together to purchase their first home in Baltimore Highlands. The couple later moved to Linthicum, Md., where they lived for 30 years.
During this time, Ed coached his son Jeff’s little league games and was actively involved at Christ United Methodist Church, even serving as the church janitor for several years.
In 2001, Ed and Shirley moved to their dream home in West Virginia, where they built a cherished community of friends. Ed discovered a new passion as a volunteer firefighter with South Morgan County VFD, finding joy in serving his community.
Ed is survived by his two children, Jeffrey Houk and Wanda (Houk) Denver; six grandchildren: Vanessa James, Jeffrey Donald Houk, Eric Thomas, Brian Thomas, Jessica Hine and Joseph Denver; and five great-grandchildren: Liam, Ezra, Caerus, Sarana and Callen, with a sixth expected in July.
Jeff and Wanda extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who provided love and support to Ed and Shirley throughout the years. They truly loved this community.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the South Morgan County Firehouse in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. on April 19. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. service and a luncheon.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the South Morgan County VFD or Greenwood Chapel.
