Nancy Z. Smith
1944-2025
Nancy Z. Smith, 80 of Pinehurst, N.C., passed away on April 7, 2025 at Sanford Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born on July 8, 1944 in Queens, N.Y. to the late John and Elizabeth Zehner.
She is survived by her husband, Gale Smith; son, Christian Sheppard and daughter-in-law, Jessica Sheppard; son, Andrew Sheppard; sister and brother-in-law, Tom and Meg Poulos; and step-son, Tracy Smith.
Nancy moved to Southern Pines with her two sons in 1983 and started working for a broker. She took her broker’s license test and passed it the first time. She later went to work for First Citizens Bank.
While raising two boys and going to night school, she graduated with honors from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian College with a Bachelor of Arts.
While working for First Citizens Bank, Nancy met her current husband. Gale will tell you this turned out to be a love story that a loss of memory could not undo.
After 20 years with First Citizens Bank, Nancy decided to retire and spend more time with her family. Nancy was a member of Southern Pines United Methodist Church.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 2 p.m. at Southern Pines United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Southern Pines United Methodist Church (Food Pantry) – 175 Midland Road Southern Pines, NC 28387 and Liberty Hospice-1005 Carthage Street Sanford, NC 27330.
