Making derby cars & memories at Gat Creek

Caperton Furnitureworks held their 26th annual “Bring your Child to Work” day last Thursday, March 26 and hosted a wooden car derby as part of the popular employee event.

Children of Gat Creek employees learned some of the inner workings of the furniture manufacturing plant first-hand as they turned blocks of maple wood into rolling derby race cars.

Forty-one youngsters participated in the work day, donning safety glasses and following crew leaders as they worked their way through the woodcraft challenge.

Following a qualifying race, four cards made it to the final competition on a Gat Creek-crafted derby track inside the plant.

Gavin Moats, seventh grader, came out at the front of the pack with his assembly. He is the son of craftsman Kurt Moats. It was Gavin Moats’ first year racing.
