Crash on Paw Paw Rd. claims life of Virginia driver

A head-on collision on Sunday, March 30 in a Hampshire County stretch of Paw Paw Road claimed the life of a Fredericksburg, Va. driver.

According to the West Virginia State Police, Senior Trooper S. M. Ward and Corporal D. A. Bowland of the Romney Detachment  were called to respond to a two-vehicle crash on WV Route 29, south of Paw Paw around 4:18 p.m.

EMS units who arrived on the accident scene reported to troopers prior to arrival that the driver of one the vehicles was confirmed deceased.

According to police, officers saw both vehicles in the northbound lane on the scene. A Toyota Tundra, driven by Paul Byer, 78, of Johnstown, Pa. had been traveling north. A 2009 Honda Civic driven by Noah Dean, 23, of Fredericksburg, Va. had been traveling south when Dean apparently lost control of the car and crossed the center line, striking the passenger side of the Tundra truck.

Byer was transported from the scene with minor injuries, troopers reported. Dean had succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Fire departments from Slanesville and Paw Paw responded. Also responding were Hampshire and Morgan County Emergency Services, Augusta Rescue Squad and Medical Examiner Stotler.

The crash  continues to be investigated by the West Virginia State Police.
