Scott Carson Whitacre
1960-2025
Scott Carson Whitacre “The Barefoot Farmer,” 64, of Slanesville, W.Va., passed away on Monday, March 10, 2025, at his home.
Scott Carson Whitacre was born on December 24, 1960, in Winchester, Va., the son of the late JC Whitacre and Frances “Eloise” Whitacre of Whitacre, Va.
He graduated from James Wood High School in 1979.
He worked at many jobs, but farming was his passion his whole life. Scott enjoyed farming, raising his family, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Scott married Melissa M. Payne Whitacre on July 17, 1987, in Augusta, W.Va.
Scott is survived by his mother, Frances “Eloise” Whitacre of Whitacre, Va.; his wife of 37 years, Melissa Whitacre of Slanesville; son, Jonathan Payne (fiancé Marleigh Pugh); daughter, Zanna (husband, Charlie Connell, Jr.); son, Zachary; daughter Lowell (husband Chris); son, Dylan (partner Samantha) and son Lastin; his sister: Sherri Brannon (husband Rodney) and numerous nieces nephews and cousins. He loved his grandchildren: Zyler, Aiden Josief, Desiree, Zander, Chelsea, Jordan, Jaxon and Zoey.
He is preceded in death, along with his father, by his brother, Barry Whitacre and two infant children: Johannas Lee and Joel Lee Whitacre.
A visitation was held at Giffin Funeral Home & Crematory in Capon Bridge, W.Va. on Thursday, March 13, 2025 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral service was held at the funeral home on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11 a.m. Officiating was Pastor David Omps. The burial followed in the Barefoot Cemetery in Slanesville.
