The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians (MDAFP) has chosen Matthew Hahn, MD as the recipient of the 2025 Family Physician of the Year award in recognition of his exemplary service, and engagement in the wellbeing of his patients and community.
Dr. Hahn received the award at the Academy’s Annual Meeting and Winter Refresher in February at the Annapolis Graduate Hotel.

The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians represents nearly 1,400 dedicated family physicians, residents, and medical students throughout the state.
“The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians presents the Family Physician of the Year award to recognize a physician who provides outstanding service to patients and their communities with compassionate, comprehensive and caring medical service on a continual basis, all while demonstrating balance between career and family,” said the academy in announcing their selection.
Dr. Hahn, of Berkeley Springs, has been practicing family medicine at his clinic — River Bend Family Medicine — for almost 25 years. He was a 1997 graduate of the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and completed residency training in 2000 at Wellspan York Hospital Family Medicine Residency.
“Dr. Hahn enjoys seeing patients of all ages but has a special place in his heart for geriatric care. He believes strongly in the value of a healthy lifestyle and has organized and participated in many health promotion activities in the area. His vision of treating patients like one would want their own family members treated reflects his dedication to the practice of family medicine,” said the Academy.
“Dr Hahn is a familiar face around town and is a big proponent of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When I run into him around town he is always engaging and genuinely interested in my well-being, asking how I’m doing and how my health is. This helps bridge the gap between being the ‘health professional’ and the rest of us,” said one of Hahn’s patients.

MDAFP Board President, Amar Duggirala, said in the announcement, “Dr. Hahn’s commitment to Family Medicine as a physician, clinic owner, advocate, and author are just a snapshot of his remarkable qualities. His ability to build relationships that span generations are at the heart of being a family medicine physician.”
Dr Hahn’s practice mission is the epitome of a family doctor, to provide compassionate, highest quality health care in an efficient and professional manner.
During his acceptance speech, Hahn said it was a great honor to accept the award and in his 25 years of practicing, “it has been quite an adventure.”
“To get an award like this is really a great honor,” Hahn said.
He gave credit to his staff at River Bend, saying he has been blessed to have “the greatest, most caring, most capable, most tenacious staff” anyone could have.
On a daily basis, Hahn said they make him a better physician and “work miracles” on behalf of their patients.
Hahn also gave credit to his wife, Bibi, who volunteered to be the practice manager when they opened the independent practice, taking on the worst insurance companies have thrown at her. Two days before the award was presented, Hahn said his wife was able to retire.
“It’s to her and to my staff that I owe this wonderful award,” Hahn said.
The Maryland Academy of Family Physicians was established in 1948 and its mission is to support Maryland family physicians in their efforts to promote equity and optimize the health of our state’s patients, families and communities.
