The Paw Paw Lady Pirates basketball team hit the road last Friday, February 28, to take on the #2-seeded Pendleton County Wildcats in the opening round of the Class A Region II playoffs. With their determined squad of just five players—dubbed the “Fab 5”the #7 Lady Pi- rates aimed to pull off a major upset on the Wildcats’ home court.
Despite their best efforts, the Lady Pirates found them- selves trailing early, as Pendleton County surged to a commanding 22-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Wildcats continued to extend their advantage in the second quarter, taking a 34-12 lead into halftime.
After the break, Pendleton County maintained their stronghold, using an 11-4 third-quarter run to widen the margin to 45-16. In the final frame, the Wildcats wrapped up the game with a decisive 55-18 victory, bringing the Lady Pirates’ postseason hopes to an end. Pendleton County’s depth and numbers proved to be a major challenge for Paw Paw, which played the entire season with just five players.
Although offensive stats were unavailable for Paw Paw, the Lady Pirates ended their first season back on the hardwood in many years with an impressive 8-6 record. One of the highlights of their campaign included a notable victory over Class A A A Morgan County rival, Berkeley Springs.
Despite the playoff loss, the Lady Pirates showcased resilience, determination, and a never-quit attitude throughout the season. With a strong foundation now in place, Paw Paw basketball is officially back and ready to build on this year’s success in the seasons to come.
