Goodman art show on display at Creekside Collective Galley

D.C.-based artist Janis Goodman, who divides her time between Washington, D.C. and Berkeley Springs, is showing her seasonal drawings and paintings at Creekside Collective Gallery now through March 31. An opening reception is being held on Saturday, March 1 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Goodman is a Professor of Fine Arts at the Corcoran College of Art at George Washington University where she teaches drawing and painting.

Late afternoon autumn, artwork by Janis Goodman.

Her drawings and paintings are based upon observations of the sky, sea, and land. They are a construction of remembered images, colors and shapes that suggest imminent change and the passage of time. The work looks at environmental changes through seasonal color change, appearance and disappearance of form and the science of growth. The paintings are done in oil paint on canvas and wood panel. They are worked in multiple thin layers to create luminosity and depth.

She is inspired by the landscape around her home in Berkeley Springs where she works in all seasons. As the vistas stay constant, the colors and forms change according to the time of year and the weather patterns.  Ten percent of sales will go to the art program at Berkeley Springs High School.

Goodman’s work is in many private and public collections in the U.S. and abroad. She has shown her work locally, nationally and, internationally. She has been the arts reviewer for WETA’s TV program Around Town since 2002. Janis has received numerous D.C. Commission on the Arts Grants to Individual Artists, The Bader Prize and is a recipient of a National Endowment support grant.

Mandi Solo curated the show for Creekside Gallery, which is located at Creekside Provisions + Supplies, 123 Congress Street in Berkeley Springs.
