The new sidewalks going in on East Independence Street have been poured, taking advantage of recent days where temperatures were well above the required 35 degrees.
As part of the town Streetscape Phase 5 project, co-chair for the Town of Bath Streetscape committee Pete Brown, said in an email that the contractor is working with the asphalt plant to make sure the concrete can be poured and will cure properly.
Brown said that there is an additive used to permit low temperature pouring to get the proper curing of the new concrete.
He said a Division of Highways representative is on site that takes samples to test in the lab to “verify a specific strength,” Brown said.
“We want to tie everything up before the new year, hopefully,” said Jeff Coughenaur, of the concrete division of contractor First Fruits.
The goal to finish the concrete pouring before the end of the year was reached due to warmer temperatures.
At presstime, contractors were starting to lay asphalt on Independence Street in front of Hunter’s Hardware and the Ice House.
