New Christmas songs and classic holiday tunes inspire hope and joy

by Kate Evans

While everyone enjoys hearing traditional and modern Christmas songs during the holiday season, many musical artists love to release original Christmas songs and their renditions of treasured holiday classics at Christmastime.

The 2024-2025 new Christmas songs on YouTube posted by Christmas Music go back several years but are from a wealth of singers, musicians and bands, some of whom have recorded other beloved Christmas tunes previously.

Give them a listen or watch their performances and you’ll find yourself being moved and getting in the holiday spirit.

Carrie Underwood

Singer/songwriter Carrie Underwood recorded a beautiful and inspirational song called  “Let There Be Peace” that she wrote with Brett James and David Garcia.  The chorus resounds with the lines “Let there be peace-peace to every nation/ Let there be hope for all the world to see/ Let there be love and joy to all the children/ Let there be peace on earth for you and me.”

Underwood has also recorded and/or performed other cherished Christmas hymns and carols such as  “O Holy Night,” “Little Drummer Boy,” “Mary, Did You Know,” “The First Noel” and “Silent Night.”

John Legend

Carrie Underwood’s song “Hallelujah” that she recorded with John Legend features exquisite vocals and harmonies as well as Legend’s phenomenal piano. It prays for peace on earth, holding on to hope for a brighter day and that the spirit of love will linger.

John Legend’s holiday hit “You Deserve It All” is a sweet, perky love song that lets his special someone know that he’s got the perfect gift and says it’s everything she’s been dreaming of.  The cast of performers in the video join Legend in some fun dancing moves at the end.

Pentatonix, Vince Gill

Pentatonix, a well-known a cappella group,  has a catchy new holiday tune “Meet Me Next Christmas.” They have other seasonal fare that includes “Carol of the Bells,” “Little Drummer Boy,” Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” “I’ll Be Home For Christmas,” and “Do You Hear What I Hear.” Pentatonix has stunning harmonies and an incredible vocal style that will capture your heart.  They have released seven Christmas albums.

Country music singer-songwriter and musician Vince Gill released Nat King Cole’s “The Christmas Song,” featuring his smooth as silk vocals and gentleness that brings alive the legendary holiday favorite.

Gill has recorded many Christmas tunes including “Silver Bells,” “Winter Wonderland,” “What Child Is This,” “O Little Child of Bethlehem,” “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”, “White Christmas” and “Let There Be Peace On Earth.”

Taylor Swift, Norah Jones

Taylor Swift   recorded her introspective and melancholy original song “Tis the Damn Season” a few years ago.

In it a woman comes back home for the holidays and finds an old flame. Swift sings “I’m stayin’ at my parents’ house/and the road not taken looks real good now/and it always leads to you  and my hometown.”

Norah Jones recorded slow and sultry versions of “Blue Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” that have a great jazzy piano and a mesmerizing laid-back feel, with “You’ll be doing alright with your Christmas of white/but I’ll have a blue, blue Christmas.”

Other new Christmas releases include Brandy’s “Christmas Everyday,” “Little Big Town’s “Glow,” Bon Jovi’s “Christmas isn’t Christmas (Without You),” Justin Bieber’s “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree,” “Dolly Parton and Jimmy Fallon’s “Almost Too Early For Christmas,” Alessia Cara’s “Jingle Bell Rock,” and Joss Stone’s “What Christmas Means To Me.”

If you want a trip down memory lane, see the Beatles video of them performing “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” that has old Christmas photos of the band with Christmas presents by a Christmas tree and also wearing Santa hats.

Check out Chuck Berry’s lively rendition of “Run Rudolph Run” and a young Elton John rocking out on “Step Into Christmas.”

Different genres

While there are many traditional Christmas carols, hymns and modern holiday songs to include in your Christmas playlist, it’s always fun to mix them up and pull from different genres as you go along.  Try out blues, rock, Motown, folk, bluegrass, country and even rap Christmas tunes to mix up your usual holiday sound.

Whatever your favorite style of holiday music,  there are many songs and artists to explore and an abundance of Christmas music to enjoy and inspire you on CDs, online or in YouTube video performances.
