An accident involving a tractor-trailer carrying an oversized load caused the U.S. 522 bridge to be closed for several hours last Thursday evening, November 14.
According to Maryland State Police, as the tractor-trailer was crossing the bridge, the oversized load on trailer shifted and another vehicle hit the load. It is reported that the load was part of a prefab building package.
Part of the fencing on the bridge was damaged as a result of the accident.
It was unknown if there were any injuries associated with the accident as the report hadn’t been fully completed by press time.
The accident closed U.S. 522 for about two hours with one lane opening for alternate use at 8:40 p.m. and all lanes open at 9:24 p.m. Drivers had been told to use an alternate route to cross the Potomac, forcing some to travel east to I-81 to get from West Virginia to Maryland.
