The Morgan County School Board decided that the first five snow days this winter will be days off for local students.
Board members approved the calendar change for inclement weather at their November 12 meeting.
Days 1-5 of inclement weather school closings will now be snow days instead of non-traditional instruction days. Days 6-10 will be non-traditional instruction days or remote learning days. Day 11 and on will be snow make-up days.
Superintendent David Banks said that Berkeley and Jefferson Counties have this structure in place. Morgan County students can’t go to James Rumsey Technical Institute in Berkeley County if it’s a snow day. Banks said it’s better to get kids outside on a snow day instead of them being inside on a device.
Board member John Rowland thought it was a good change. Board member Justin Litten said it was good for James Rumsey students, too.
Litten wondered why the preference for snow days or non-traditional instruction days wasn’t on the school calendar survey.
