State says bridge on Powerhouse to reopen soon

Following several months of work, West Virginia Division of Highways officials have told The Morgan Messenger that the low water bridge on Powerhouse Road in Great Cacapon should reopen this week or in the near future, weather permitting.

District 5 engineers said state crews have been replacing the superstructure of the “Cacapon River Dam Bridge,” known locally as the Low Water Bridge on the Cacapon.

“Since this bridge is a low water crossing that frequently is submerged, the new steel beams have been coated with an ‘immersion service’ coating system. This is an effort to provide a longer lifespan for the new steel,” said DOH engineers in Burlington.

New steel beams are in place and the current work is finishing the installation of the timber deck. Highway officials said all work should be completed and the bridge should be reopened to traffic this week.

Contractors lowered new steel beams into place on the bridge across the Cacapon River on Powerhouse Road last month.
