It’s Stacy–Healthy Eats: Stewed Prunes

Stewed Prunes

The one question I get asked most often by my patients is how to relieve constipation without taking laxatives. Many people suffer from constipation, especially after surgery. It can be a side effect of anesthesia. My Great Grandma, Arizona Henry, always kept a close eye on my bowel movement when I was a kid. I always complained about constipation so I could get that chocolate ex-lax.

Prunes, nature’s gift, are a wonderful alternative to laxatives or stool softeners.  These dried plums are a powerhouse of vitamins and minerals, including B vitamins, potassium, vitamin K, iron, magnesium, and zinc. Their high fiber content makes them a perfect food for those in need of a little extra help. And the best part? They’re delicious. If you’re one of the many dealing with constipation, try eating three prunes a few days a week. Stew yourself some prunes for a gentle, regular bowel movement.

Since we all have this bodily function, I don’t understand why people are so shy about discussing it. Another thing I often recommend to my patients is a bidet. It’s a simple, affordable way to keep your hinny clean after a good bowel movement. Bidets are real-life savers during colonoscopy preparation. You can easily find one for less than $40 online. Bidets are particularly helpful for individuals with limited arm and shoulder mobility. Whether you have hemorrhoids, ulcerative colitis, or simply want a cleaner heiny, a bidet is a great investment that’s easy to install.
