House & barn fire being investigated as possible arson

A Saturday afternoon fire that drew response from companies around the region is being investigated as a possible arson, according to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.

Fire units were dispatched to Mattjack Trail off Spriggs Road near Highland Ridge on September 14.

The fire destroyed a barn and partially burned an abandoned two-story wood frame house on the property.

Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company was in command of the fire scene during the event. The following agencies assisted Company 1: Hancock Volunteer Fire Company, Great Cacapon Volunteer Fire Company, South Morgan Volunteer Fire Department, Reynolds Store Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Company, Slanesville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company, Morgan County EMS, Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, Maryland State Police – Aviation Command, West Virginia State Police and the Washington County Rehab Unit.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the West Virginia Fire Marshal’s office.
