Charles Carroll Wheeler III
1943-2024
Charles Carroll Wheeler III, 80, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. passed away on August, 24, 2024.
Born November 18, 1943, in Baltimore, Md., he was the son of the late C. Carroll Wheeler, Jr. and Dorothy Hale Wheeler and the devoted husband to Retha M. Miller.
Chuck is also preceded in death by his sister, Nancy JoAnne Millender.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife, Retha M. Miller, and three daughters, Dana Brazerol (Tony), Deborah Helmke (John), and Marti Carder (Josh). He is also survived by his two brothers, Douglas Wheeler, and C. Edwin Wheeler. Chuck was the devoted grandfather of 10 grandchildren.
Chuck was a veteran of the U.S. Airforce, having served from June 1961 to June 1965. He graduated from Hereford High School, Parkton, Md. (1961) and obtained a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore, Baltimore, Md. (1977).
Chuck retired in 1994 as the Chief Investigator for the Committee on Government Operations, U.S. House of Representatives. Chuck also worked as a computer specialist/auditor for the General Accounting Office (GAO) and over the previous 15 years held technical positions at NASA tracking stations in support of the Gemini and Apollo space missions, including Tananarive, Madagascar.
Chuck relocated to Berkeley Springs, W.Va. in 1994, where he established and operated two downtown businesses, Fairfax Coffee House (15 years) and Mountain Laurel Gallery (22 years). Chuck served two terms as the President of the Berkeley Springs-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Morgan Arts Council.
Chuck enjoyed his golf matches with his best buddy, Dennis and closely followed politics, the Ravens, and the Orioles. He loved cultivating his two businesses, including bringing live music to the coffee house and selling American handmade crafts at the award-winning gallery. He loved watching his older grandchildren through college years and his younger grandchildren grow into very happy and bright kids, and his daughters build great careers and loving families.
Along with his business endeavors, Chuck loved traveling on Viking Cruises and other land tours with Retha. But most of all, he loved and cherished the fourteen years that he shared with his best friend and lover, Retha. Thank you for all your care and love. I love you baby. -Chuck
