Back-to-school bash gives families fresh start for new school year

by Lisa Schauer

Morgan County Parks and Recreation hosted its annual back-to-school bash at Warm Springs Intermediate School on Friday, August 9.

Heavy rain from tropical storm Debby caused organizers to move the event into the school’s main hallways and cafeteria. Since COVID, the back-to-school bash has operated as a drive through collection event.

Skies cleared as people parked their vehicles and lined up in front of the entrance waiting to be checked in according to their school and grade.

Inside, barbers and hairdressers gave kids free haircuts. Volunteers were stationed behind tables laden with bookbags and school supplies.

Friends and neighbors greeted each other, enjoying free pizza and music broadcast from Morgan County radio station Cool 92.9.

Before leaving, each family was handed a bag of fresh produce to take home.

Students and families connected with each other as they gathered supplies and extras for the start of the Morgan County School year, which kicks off Tuesday, August 20.
