Jennings E. Gilpin
1939-2024
Jennings E. Gilpin, 85, of Morgantown, West Virginia departed this life on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown.
He was born February 7, 1939 at Mt. Gay (Logan County), West Virginia, was the son of the late Jesse Francis Gilpin and Edith Arizona (McDonough) Gilpin.
He grew up in a coal mining community, and was looked after by his family: grandmother, Lillian McDonough, his aunt and uncle, Cleo and Clell McKinney and uncle, Thomas Gilpin.
Mr. Gilpin was a 1957 graduate of Logan High School and was a Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1957 – 1961. He served aboard the USS Mount McKinley as a radioman, working on encryption and decryption.
He worked as a high voltage electrician at Pepco, Allegheny Ballistic Laboratory and the United States Capitol, and was a proud union member. He boxed in the Golden Gloves and in the Navy, loved playing the fiddle in old time jams with his many friends, gardening and yard work, spoiling grandchildren and watching WVU sports.
On August 3, 1962, he married Emma Sue Curry Gilpin, who preceded him in death on March 1, 2004. Surviving are one daughter, Jennifer Gilpin of Manassas, Va.; two sons,Thomas Gilpin (Ronda) of Morgantown, W.Va. and Robert Gilpin (Sharon) of Silver Spring, Md.; one sister, Lillian McCabe (Charles, Sr.) of Columbus, Ga.; one brother, James “Jimmy” Gilpin (Deborah) of Norman, Okla.; four grandchildren, Matthew Gilpin of Fairmont, W.Va., Megan Lehr of Woodbridge, Va., Katie Parkinson of Stafford, Va. and Zachary Gilpin of Tucson, Ariz. and two great-grandchildren, McKinley Parkinson and Clyde Haase.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Gilpin and Jarrett Gilpin and one sister, Elaine Davis.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2024 at Kimble Funeral Home in Paw Paw, where a funeral service was held at 12 noon Tuesday, April 9. Internment will be at Camp Hill Cemetery.
