Trial begins for man accused of murdering Mullen

Jurors were being selected on Tuesday morning for the trial of the man accused of the September 2022 stabbing death of Scott Mullen of Berkeley Springs.

Gabriel Cardwell, 22, of Martinsburg was indicted in April for voluntary manslaughter in the killing.

Cardwell is accused of stabbing Mullen to death during an altercation at a gathering in southern Morgan County.

At the time of Cardwell’s arrest, witnesses had told police he had shown up at a property in the 9000 block of Winchester Grade Road and wouldn’t leave after being asked to several times.

Witnesses told police Mullen tried to intervene when he saw Cardwell get into a confrontation with a young woman at the residence.

Mullen allegedly told people at the residence he thought he had been stabbed. Friends called EMS for help but Mullen died at the scene. During a medical examination, it was determined that Mullen had at least 13 stab wounds.

Morgan County Prosecuting Attorney Dan James will argue the state’s case during the trial at the Morgan County courthouse.
