State will open detour around bypass work on Fairfax Street Friday

Construction of a bypass overpass in the area of Fairfax Street and Fairview Drive in Berkeley Springs will re-route traffic starting this Friday, October 20.

The West Virginia Division of Highways released information about the change in traffic flow on Wednesday, October 18. According to their press release, the detour will be in place 24 hours a day until the spring of 2024.

No further information was shared in the release, but based on construction patterns at that location, it appears that drivers will leave the current Fairfax Street in the area of the stop sign and drive on a northern detour road that will reconnect with Fairfax Street a short distance to the east.

The DOH said signs will be in place to direct traffic. They are asking motorists to travel with caution and allow extra travel time as this detour takes effect and bypass construction continues in the area.

This area is a busy access route to Warm Springs Middle School, Warm Springs Intermediate School and Fairview Drive, including War Memorial Hospital.
