Vesta Glendora Maravelis

1933-2023

Vesta Glendora Maravelis, age 89, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at her home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born October 14, 1933, in Hancock, Md., she was the daughter of the late Berman and Ida Belle (Barnhart) Wills.

Vesta will be fondly remembered as a strong, hard working woman, who loved her family and delighted in visits with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, who best knew her as Nanny.

Vesta worked outside the home for more than 50 years and upon retiring, never slowed down and was always busy.

She was an avid gardener with an amazing green thumb, who, as she would say, hated being cooped up inside and was happiest outdoors. She loved camping, taking road trips, harvesting black walnuts, and later in life, just sitting on her front porch.

While generally serious, Vesta wasn’t without a sense of humor, and liked to joke that her last name was pronounced “marvelous” because that’s what she was. She had a knack for doing 1000+ piece puzzles and beating anyone who dared to take her on in a game of cards.

Fiercely independent to the end, Vesta was intent on living out her days in her own home. With the help of family and (with special thanks to) her caregiver and friend Linda Rupert from Senior Life Services of Morgan County, she was able to do just that.

Vesta is survived by her children, Lois Manfull of Hedgesville, W.Va., Marsha Bowers, Karen Hensell and Roseann Booth, all of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Marshall Maravelis of Williamsport, Md., Julie Hale of Everett, Pa., and Michael Maravelis of Great Cacapon, W.Va.; her sisters, Jesse Wheicht, Judy Powell, and Charlotte Mellott; her brothers, Marvin Wills and Gary Wills; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Phyllis Appel, Beulah Maravelis, Nancy Martin, and Mary Booth, and her brothers, Jake Wills and Herbert Wills.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time. Pastor Dave Kerns will officiate. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Vesta’s memory may be made to Senior Life Services of Morgan County, 106 Sand Mine Road, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
