Man arrested for arson in Paw Paw woods fire

A Capon Bridge man has been charged with arson for allegedly setting fire to a wooded area along Paw Paw Road last Tuesday, August 22.

West Virginia State Police Sgt. S.R. Smith arrested Brett Dick, 22, on Tuesday after being called to an arson in progress.

According to a police complaint filed in Morgan County Magistrate Court, Sgt. Smith was called to the area of Greystone Trail and the 2000 block of Paw Paw Road because an observer had seen a fire there and a man along the road in that vicinity.

While police were on their way to the location, Morgan County 911 was advised that a man was walking down the middle of Paw Paw Road waving a knife and “acting erratically.”

When Sgt. Smith located Brett Dick, he had two knives in his possession and a red BIC lighter. The officer reported that the man appeared to be under the influence of some intoxicating substance.

Paw Paw Volunteer Fire Department extinguished the fire, which burned 30 by 50 feet along a woodline.

Dick is being held at the Eastern Regional Jail in lieu of a $10,000 surety bond.
