Gene Ulysses Spring

1932-2023

Gene Ulysses Spring, age 91, of Great Cacapon, W.Va., died on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at Winchester Medical Center.

Born January 16, 1932 in Great Cacapon, W.Va., he was the son of the late Raymond Blaine and Nellie Catherine Unger Spring.

He attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Great Cacapon and Emmanuel Baptist Church in Great Cacapon, where he served as deacon. He was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. Gene served with the United States Air Force from February 12, 1952 until his honorable discharge February 11, 1956 during the Korean War, where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He worked as a material handler with General Motors in Martinsburg, W.Va. Gene was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, gardening and watching baseball, especially his favorite team, the Yankees.

Gene is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris Jean Holiday Spring, at home, his three children, Roger Deron Spring and his wife, Joyce, Lisa Kay Miller and her husband, Tim and Bradley Blaine Spring and his wife, Bridgette, all of Great Cacapon, one sister, Gloria DeLight Johnson of Inwood, W.Va., eight grandchildren, Jessica, Nathan, Matthew, Ashley, Daniel, James, Corey and Blaine “Buck,” nine great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Wyatt, Graysen, Ivy, Khloe, Brooklyn, Bentley, Blaine, Jr. and Olivia and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Darrell Gene Spring and Ronald Eugene Spring, one grandson, Austin Nichols Miller and one brother Gladstone Eugene Spring.

Graveside services with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 14, 2023 at Mt. Nebo Cemetery, 791 Nebo Road, Great Cacapon, W.Va., with Pastor Dick Voorhaar and Pastor Roy Riley officiating.
