Freda Janet Mauzy Unger, 97, of Alexandria, Virginia died June 20, 2023.
Born to David William Mauzy and Vallie Omps Mauzy on September 17, 1925, in Timber Ridge, West Virginia. She was the sixth of seven siblings.
Freda was a graduate of Berkeley Springs High School.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 71 years, Paul F. Unger, their infant son, William Boyd Unger, her six siblings, Lola Crosen, Lathara Green, Clark Mauzy, Thelma Clowser, Reva Vidlock, and Leon Mauzy, and her grandson Eric Unger.
Surviving are her and Paul’s three children, Richard and wife, Sharron, of Alexandria, Virginia; Larry and wife, Debra, of Port Angeles, Washington; and Pamela and husband, Larry Wolford, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; four grandchildren Matthew Wolford and wife, Liz, of Greenville, South Carolina; Nicole Sparling and husband, Tim, of Reston, Virginia, Erin Olson and husband, Erik, of Blacksburg, Virginia; and Kelly Unger of Warrenton, Virginia; eight great-grandchildren, Jack and Evie Weiss; Jackson, Julia, Sloane and Sawyer Wolford; and Lilja and Johan Olson.
She was caring, loving, and devoted to her family. She cherished her role as wife, mother, and homemaker. When her children were young, she volunteered as room mother, cub scout and brownie scout leader. Freda was an amazing seamstress and created elaborate costumes for her children for birthdays, holidays and special events. She relished family meals and celebrations and was a tremendous cook. She was Paul’s designated navigator, with her trusty maps in hand, as they traveled the United States. Freda was an amateur historian and genealogist and enjoyed researching and sharing information on their family trees.
She will be remembered as a kind and forgiving woman and truly missed by many.
Services will be held privately.
