Armeta M. Gaither

1938-2023

Armeta Mae Gaither, age 84, of Gastonia, N.C., and formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Thursday, February 9, 2023 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia, N.C.

Born November 29, 1938 in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Melvin Virgil “Jerry” and Hester Leona Mencer Whisner.

She was a Christian. Armeta was a 1956 graduate of Berkeley Springs High School. She started her work career by working as a seamstress with London Fog in Hancock, Md., then Armeta operated the Fairfax Restaurant from 1987 to 1988. She worked as a waitress in local restaurants in the area. Armeta retired from National Wildlife Federation as a phone operator. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter #1311 in Berkeley Springs. Armeta enjoyed sewing, quilting, canning, watching movies, racing cars, playing games on her tablet and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandbabies.

Armeta is survived by her daughter, Tammy Lynn Waugh of Gastonia, N.C.; one sister, Patricia L. Hook of Great Cacapon; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three children, Donald Reid “Yogi” McCumbee, David Wayne McCumbee and Darla Jo McCumbee and two sisters, Judith Gossard and Karen L. Bushman.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 18, at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Jack Hiles officiating, where the family received friends from 11 a.m. until service time. Private burial was in Greenway Cemetery.
