This past Saturday, October 15, the Berkeley Springs Indians football team hit the road for a rare Saturday after- noon contest against the Hampshire Trojans. With three games left in the regular season the Indians were look- ing to end a seven game los- ing streak and deal the Class AAA Trojans a home loss.
Hampshire took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter and then upped the score to 10-0. The Trojans were putting together another drive before sophomore Gavin Young picked off a Hampshire pass and took it in for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good and the Indians trailed 10-6.
Berkeley Springs took the lead in the second quarter as fullback Hunter Ambrose scored from two yards out and the two point conversion was good and the Tribe led
14-10. Hampshire bounced back and reclaimed the lead at 17-14 with a touchdown of their own.
Later in the quarter the Indians reclaimed the lead as Aiden Cain found Gavin Young open for a 14 yard touchdown reception. Axel Robles’ extra point was good and the Indians headed into the half with a 21-17 lead.
Hampshire bounced back in the third quarter with a touchdown reception to take a 23-21 lead. The Trojans built on the lead with an interception return for a touch-down and held a 29-21 lead. Berkeley Springs responded late in the third quarter as Cain found Holden Gurson for a 20 yard touchdown reception. The two-point conversion attempt was good and the end of three quarters both teams were deadlocked at 29-29.
Hampshire used the fourth quarter as a motivation and scored two touchdowns to stymie any chances of a Berkeley Springs comeback to wrap up the 43-29 win.
Offensively, the Indians were led by Aiden Cain (18/28, 254 yards passing and two touchdown passes), Conner Duvall (2/5, 23 yards passing, 42 yards rushing), Hunter Ambrose (two yards rushing and a touchdown), Gavin Young (10 receptions, 110 yards receiving, one touchdown reception and one interception for a touch- down), Holden Gurson (five receptions for 68 yards and a touchdown reception), Conner Duvall (two receptions for 63 yards) and Carlester Allen (two receptions for 35 yards).
Berkeley Springs (0-8) will host East Fairmont Friday, October 21 at Morgan Field. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
