Portia Rico Shives

1936-2022

Portia Rico Shives, age 85, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Monday, January 10, 2022 at The Berkeley Springs Center LLC.

Born August 14, 1936 in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Herbert Thornton and Annie Elizabeth Allen Merchant.

She attended Berkeley Springs Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Portia attended schools in Morgan County.

She worked at several canneries around the area including A.C. Unger Canning Factory in Berkeley Springs, Shawnee Springs Cannery in Cross Junction, Va., and Zero Pak in Winchester, Va. and was a homemaker in recent years.

Portia is survived by her children, Roger Lee Shives, Jr. and Teresa Lyn Shives, both of Berkeley Springs, one sister, Alice Jean McCullough of Mercersburg, Pa., two brothers, Herbert Thornton Merchant, Jr. and Kenneth Eugene Merchant, both of Berkeley Springs and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Lee Shives, Sr., four sisters, Mary Elizabeth Roach, Emma Mae Merchant, Anna Mae Merchant, Dorothy Lee Merchant, three brothers, Vernon Ernest Merchant, Charles Edward Merchant and Glen Cleo Merchant.

Services and burial for Portia will be private.
