Hancock students were challenged to raise almost $2,100 with their spare change over the last couple weeks. The Pennies for Patients program ran from November 29 though December 17 and in that short amount of time, those students shattered their goal.
The initial goal for 2021 was $2,095.35, which was the average for the last 14 years.
This year people stepped up and donated $3,567.65, shattering the goal by $1,472.40.
The class with the most money raised overall was April Shupp’s seventh graders with $667.66 thanks to an anonymous general donor’s gift of $500.
Even without that, said School Counselor David “Doc” Holiday, Shupp’s class was the leader for Hancock Middle-Senior High School and will receive Sheetz and Pizza Hut gift cards.
Over at Hancock Elementary School, Gavin Myer’s fourth graders had $550.02 donated and were followed closely behing by Tero Wolford’s third grade class with $471.41. They will receive Sheets and Pizza Hut gift cards.
Hancock Elementary gave a total of $2,509.09 while Hancock Middle-Senior High School had $1,062.56.
Holiday said over the 15 years the schools have been doing Pennies for Patients, Hancock has contributed “an amazing” $32,902.61 toward finding a cure for Leukemia and other cancers.
“Thanks for giving and caring,” Holiday said. “It truly is a season and time of hope and good wishes.”
