James Patrick Conway

1938-2021

James Patrick Conway, age 83, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Sunday, December 12, 2021 on his way home from a gathering at his church.

Born September 8, 1938 in Scranton, Pa., he was the son of the late Andrew James and Clare Veronica Klink Conway.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and established the local chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Jim was a graduate of St. Ann’s High School in Scranton, Pa., earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland University College, and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. He served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. Jim retired as a logistics officer with the National Security Agency. He and his late wife worked tirelessly with charities for the poor, especially for local soup kitchens over the years. He enjoyed basketball, football, gardening, woodworking, and loved to play cards.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Ann Marie Conway of Berkeley Springs, Teresa Mae Love and her husband Eric of Severna Park, Md., Carolyn Reneé Hoare and her husband Thomas of New York City, N.Y. and Christina Fay Lawrence and her husband David of Savannah, Ga., one sister, Rosemary Condolon of Gambrills, Md., one brother, Thomas Conway of Scranton, Pa., six grandchildren, Patrick Joseph Love and his fiancé Sarah DaRe of Edgewater, Md., Benjamin Conway Love of Glen Burnie, Md., Logan Allen Placek of Savannah, Ga., Jara Elaine Placek of Savannah, Ga., Darien John Lawrence of Savannah, Ga., and Matthew Gregory Jerry Lawrence of Savannah, Ga. and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving companion, Pam Hoffman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Kay Hardy Conway on May 6, 2018, two sisters, Clare Schmidt and Genevieve Lee, and seven brothers, Gerard, Joseph, Paul, John, Lawrence, Leo, and Andrew Conway.

A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 67 Liberty Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. with the Rev. Fr. Mikee Lecias as celebrant. The Tri-State Honor Guard will provide military honors. Entombment will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Willow Dale Cemetery, 30 Hedgehog Lane, Bradford, PA 16701.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Monday, December 27 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.
